The iRobotics team consists of a group of 10 children ranging from grades 4th – 9th who took part in a Lego Robotics Competition on Saturday, November 21, 2009. For two months the group worked diligently researching issues related to transportation in the local community. Specifically, they decided to tackle the problem of “information transportation,” and developed a plan to create a municipal wifi system. As a part of the research, the students developed an innovative solution, performed a community wide survey (n=100), designed and built a robot, and programmed their robot to perform pre-determined missions within a two minute, thirty second time frame. The group met with experts in the area of their research which included the wifi administrator of Anderson, IN, and members of the South Bend Chamber of Commerce. All the students’ hard work paid off at the Regional Qualifying Competition where they earned two first place trophies: Innovative Solution and Research Presentation. Out of the 16 teams who entered the competition, the iRobotics team received a final ranking of 2nd, and will compete at the state tournament to be held at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne on December 12, 2009. The students are also slated to present their innovative idea to the director of Innovation Park at Notre Dame prior to the state competition.
