Five local high school students competed recently in the finals of the University of Notre Dame’s 2011 Invention Convention Youth Business Plan Competition.

Matt Danik, a sophomore at Clay High School, won the first-place prize of $500 for Danik’s Landscaping, which offers landscaping and maintenance services at affordable prices.

Second place and $300 went to Clay High junior Ashley Hesla for Flopsocks — cute, fluffy and comfortable socks designed to be worn with flip flops.

Penn High School sophomore Madeleine Paulsen won $200 for third place with Spice of Life Bakery.

The two other finalists included Kimberley Barber, a Clay sophomore, whose entry was a Fundana Bandana wallet, and Penn sophomore Nick Ortega, with Ortega Advertising Services.

All five finalists traveled to New York City April 13-14 to participate in a national youth entrepreneurship gala.
